  9. 2016-2016 - Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon
HDR (Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches)
My HDR thesis provides a much-welcomed occasion to put together a comprehensive account of what Controversy Mapping is to me. It is CM that brought me to the médialab, it is the course I have been teaching for the last 8 years and the approach that supported most of my projects. CM is a method with a solid tradition and an upward trajectory, increasingly used around the world for teaching and research. Yet, CM still lacks its instruction manual – a text that would distill its unusual brew of STS reflections and digital developments. My HDR thesis is an effort in this direction.

 Research Projects

  1. 2019-2021 - CNRS Center for Internet and Society
DOOM (Systems-theory for the Disorders Of Online Media – Co-PI with Paolo Frasca) (Scientific Coordination)

Funded by the special CNRS 80|Prime fund for interdisciplinary research, the project is a collaboration between myself and Paolo Frasca, mathematician at the GIPSA-lab of Grenoble. Together we will co-direct an interdisciplinary Ph.D. thesis on the disorders of digital communication, such as the formation of “filter bubbles” and the viral propagation of “junk news”. The project starts from the assumption that these information disorders are direct consequences of the contemporary media infrastructure and of the dynamics of collective attention that they generate. In order to capture these dynamics, this project advocates the mathematical modelling of the interplay between the medium (algorithmic component) and the users (human component). The resulting dynamics shall be explored by a system-theory approach, using notions such as feedback and stability.
  2. 2019-2019 - CNRS Center for Internet and Society
Drafting an atlas of artificial intelligence's matters of reflection (Scientific Coordination)

To facilitate the exploration of the issues and expertises mobilised by the Global Forum on Artificial Intelligence for Humanity, we have created an atlas of the recent scientific literature on AI for humanity. Starting from a query targeting both the societal implications of AI technologies and the use of AI in human and social sciences, we collected a corpus of more than 23 thousand bibliographic records corresponding to journal articles and conference proceedings published on these topics in the last five years. Using co-citation techniques and force-directed network layout, we created a base map of the relevant scientific literature and use it to locate the keywords, subject areas and institutions appearing in our bibliographic corpus. The results of this work revealed the great diversity of matters of reflections to be addressed during the Forum (and by the International Panel on AI that it prefigures), but also the seamless connection between technical questions related to advanced techniques of computation of robotics innovation and social and human implications of their implementation.
  3. 2018-2018 - INRIA/ENS-Lyon
miniVAN (visual analyser of network) (Scientific Coordination)

  4. 2014-2015 - médialab Sciences Po (Paris)

'Supported by the Agence Nationale de la Recherche Française (call ''Changements Environnementaux Planétaires et société''), MEDEA aims at mapping the French controversies on the adaptation to global warming.'
  6. 2011-2014 - médialab Sciences Po (Paris)
EMAPS (Electronic Maps to Assist Public Science) - http://www.emapsproject.com/ (Scientific Coordination)

Supported byethe 7th Framework Programmeeof the European Union, Emaps aims at coordinating the work of six European research centers to invent innovative ways to map technoscientific debate (especially, but not exclusively around climate change adaptation) - emapsproject.com
